Restore on Desktop

One more functionality allowing to restore the data — Restore On Desktop — is now available. This feature gives an ability to have an access to backup history for files/folders on a remote PC via Windows Explorer shell. To get the files available for restore just connect to the remote computer and choose an appropriate network share. Only shared folders/files selected for backup on a remote computer could be restored. These files can be easily recognized because they are marked with overlay icon. There are 2 available options of restore according to your need.These options are available in the context menu that appears right-clicking on the folders\files:

  • Restore previous versions option is available only for single selected file which is included in backup set. When choosing this menu item, the dialog window with all versions of file will be shown. You are able to select the version you need and restore it.
  • Restore deleted files option is avalable for current folder or for single selected folder which are included in backup set. When choosing this type of menu item, the dialog window with a list of all files and folders removed from selected folder will be shown. User can navigate throw removed folders hierarchy. Also it is possible to restore latest available version of removed file or call context menu to select version of removed file to restore.

After the restore process is done, restored file will be located on the same place as the original file and have the following name:

<original_name>_<backup_date>.<original_ext>

E. g. the file with name /textfile.txt/ after restore will have the name /textfile_2011-12-10_12-30-01.txt/.

RoD installation

To install RestoreOnDesktop tool on a remote computer please do the following steps:

  • download psexec.exe from Sysiternals utils
  • put an appropriate rod-installer in the same directory as psexec.exe
  • run command:
psexec \\remotepc -c rod-installer /S

where \\remotepc is IP of the remote machine you are going to use.

It could be also possible to use parameters -u for username and -p for password for the remote access:

psexec \\remotepc -u user -p password -crod-installer.exe /S 

where \\remotepc is IP of the remote machine.
