The following prerequisites should be set for using VSS SharePoint Backup Plugin:
The availability of VSS SharePoint is determined by licence you use, therefore the first step that should be done is adding an appropriate feature whose name is BackupVssSharePoint in the Product assigned to user’s contract:

Pre-Backup
Before start using VSS SharePoint Backup Plugin you should setup your environment as it is described here
Backup scenario
- The main condition are services that should be started before backup process:
SharePoint Administration
SharePoint Foundation Search V14
SharePoint Timer
SharePoint Server Search (if SharePoint Server is installed)
- To start the backup process just select the VssSharePointBackupPlugin on the backup tab and press the Start Backup button:

Restore scenario
- Before executing a restoration, the following services should be started:
SharePoint VSS Writer Volume Shadow Copy SharePoint Tracing
- But the following services must be stopped:
SharePoint Administration
SharePoint Foundation Search V14
SharePoint Timer
SharePoint Server Search (if SharePoint Server is installed)
- If the whole farm is being restored, SharePoint Foundation and Internet Information Server (IIS) must be shutdown.
- If only selected Web applications or other components are being restored, the Web applications must be shutdown and the components may not be in use during the restoration.
- To start the restore, go to Restore tab and select the appropriate data location and start the process:
